Sustainability has always been something close to my heart, and it’s a principle I’ve worked hard to embed into everything we do at House Designer. When I started the business, I knew I wanted to offer more than just beautiful interiors and gardens—I wanted to create designs that respect the environment and help people live more sustainably.
Garden design, in particular, feels like a natural place to make a positive impact. After all, gardens connect us directly to the natural world. So, as we’ve developed our online garden design services, I’ve been intentional about making sustainability a priority at every stage.
Why Sustainability Matters
Sustainability is personal for me. It’s not just about ticking boxes or following trends—it’s about leaving a legacy that aligns with my values. Gardens are spaces where we can actively work with nature rather than against it. Whether that means selecting plants that support local wildlife or choosing materials that are kinder to the planet, every small decision adds up.
How We Design with Sustainability in Mind
At House Designer, we approach sustainability as a mindset. It’s not a separate service or an add-on—it’s woven into the fabric of how we work.
Choosing the Right Plants: We always encourage clients to incorporate native and drought-resistant plants into their gardens. These plants naturally thrive in the UK climate, require less water, and support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
-
Using Eco-Friendly Materials: We’ve made a conscious effort to work with suppliers who offer sustainable options, from FSC-certified timber to recycled materials for patios and pathways. It’s important to us that the materials we recommend reflect our commitment to the environment.
-
Water Conservation: We often include features like rainwater harvesting systems and permeable paving in our designs to ensure that water use is efficient and responsible.
Sustainability in Action
One of my favourite projects was for a client who wanted to transform a small urban garden into a sustainable oasis. We used a mix of wildflowers and evergreens to create year-round interest and installed a simple rainwater collection system to reduce their reliance on mains water. Watching that garden come to life and knowing it was designed to support local biodiversity felt incredibly rewarding.
House Designer’s Garden Design Services
Offering online garden design services has also been a game-changer for us. Not only does it make our services more accessible, but it also reduces the need for unnecessary travel. Everything from consultations to 3D plans can be done remotely, which helps to minimise our carbon footprint while still delivering exceptional results.
Designing Gardens That Give Back
Sustainable garden design isn’t just about the environment; it’s about people, too. Gardens should be spaces that nurture us as much as they nurture the planet. Whether that means creating a haven for wildlife, a space for growing your own food, or simply a peaceful retreat, I want the gardens we design to enrich people’s lives in every way possible.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on House Designer’s journey so far, I’m proud of how we’ve embraced sustainability. But I also know there’s always more to learn and do. My goal is to continue finding new ways to make eco-conscious design accessible and practical for everyone.
If you’re thinking about reimagining your garden, I hope this has given you some insight into how we approach sustainability at House Designer. It’s a process I’m deeply passionate about, and I’m excited to see how our gardens can continue to make a difference.
